Who qualifies

Households age 60+ have a simplified application, higher gross income limit (165% FPL in many states), and looser asset rules. Medical expenses above $35/month are deductible.

What you get

EBT card to buy groceries. 2026 max benefit is $292/month for one person, $537/month for a couple. Even a small benefit ("$23 minimum") is worth claiming — it triggers eligibility for other programs.

Tips that matter

If you live alone, can't cook, or have a disability, you can use SNAP at restaurants in the Restaurant Meals Program (live in CA, AZ, RI, MD, IL, MI, NY, VA, KY — expanding). Online grocery purchase via Amazon, Walmart, Aldi works in all 50 states.

How to apply

Apply through your state SNAP office (find at fns.usda.gov/snap/state-directory). BenefitsCheckUp.org has a quick eligibility screen.

State-level help on top of this

Most states layer their own programs on top of this federal one — pharmacy assistance, property tax relief, state Medicaid waivers. Pick your state to see what's available where you live.
