Who qualifies

Before full retirement age, you may qualify if a disability or blindness affects your ability to work for at least a year (or is expected to result in death) and you have enough work history. In 2026, substantial gainful activity is generally $1,690/month, or $2,830/month for people SSA considers blind.

What you get

Monthly benefit equal to your projected Social Security retirement amount. Converts automatically to retirement at FRA. Medicare kicks in 24 months after SSDI starts.

Federal figures verified July 16, 2026. Sources: SSA disability eligibility rules.

Tips that matter

SSA considers your medical condition, work history, age, education, and skills. If SSA denies your claim, read the notice promptly and use the official appeal process by the deadline shown in it.
