Before full retirement age, you may qualify if a disability or blindness affects your ability to work for at least a year (or is expected to result in death) and you have enough work history. In 2026, substantial gainful activity is generally $1,690/month, or $2,830/month for people SSA considers blind.
What you get
Monthly benefit equal to your projected Social Security retirement amount. Converts automatically to retirement at FRA. Medicare kicks in 24 months after SSDI starts.
